Sahih al-Bukhari 4185 (Book 64, Hadith 225) #4000
Combining Umra & Hajj in One Trip

SUMMARY: Abdullah bin Umar intended to perform Umra and Hajj, but due to obstacles he was unable to reach the Ka'ba. He then followed the example of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and performed only one Tawaf and one Sai for both Umra and Hajj.

Narrated Nafi': One of 'Abdullah's sons said to 'Abdullah (bin 'Umar) "I wish you would stay this year (and not perform Hajj) as I am afraid that you will not be able to reach the Ka'ba". On that he (ie 'Abdullah bin 'Umar) said, "We went out with the Prophet (for 'Umra), and when the Quraish infidel intervened between us and the Ka'ba, the Prophet slaughtered his Hadi and shaved (his head), and his companions cut short their hair". Then 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said, "I make you witness that I have intended to perform 'Umra and if I am allowed to reach the Ka'ba, I will perform the Tawaf, and if something (ie obstacles) intervene between me and the Ka'ba, then I will do what Allah's Messenger did". Then after going for a while, he said, "I consider the ceremonies (of both 'Umra and Hajj as one and the same, so I would like you to witness that I have intended to perform Hajj along with my 'Umra". So he performed only one Tawaf and one Sai (between Safa and Marwa) and finished the Ihram of both Umra and Hajj).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive your best efforts towards fulfilling your religious duties even when faced with difficulties or obstacles along the way .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Abdullah bin Umar's intention to perform both Umrah and Hajj in one trip. He was prevented from reaching the Ka'ba due to obstacles, so he followed the example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head when faced with similar circumstances. As a result, Abdullah bin Umar decided that he would combine both trips into one by performing only one Tawaf around the Ka'ba as well as a Sa’i between Safa and Marwa hills for both trips instead of two separate ones. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive our best to fulfill our religious obligations even if we are faced with difficulties or obstacles along the way; however, if it is not possible for us to do so then we should follow what Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did in such situations which is combining two religious obligations into one trip or ritual instead of abandoning them altogether.
