The Power of Chastity and Wisdom

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of being chaste and wise, and how Hassan bin Thabit defended the Prophet (ﷺ) through his poetry.

Narrated Masruq: We went to 'Aisha while Hassan bin Thabit was with her reciting poetry to her from some of his poetic verses, saying "A chaste wise lady about whom nobody can have suspicion. She gets up with an empty stomach because she never eats the flesh of indiscreet (ladies)"'.Aisha said to him, "But you are not like that". I said to her, "Why do you grant him admittance, though Allah said:-- "and as for him among them, who had the greater share therein, his will be a severe torment". (24.11) On that, 'Aisha said, "And what punishment is more than blinding?" She, added, "Hassan used to defend or say poetry on behalf of Allah's Messenger (against the infidels).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for chastity and wisdom in our lives; use words correctly in defense or praise; respect Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power of chastity and wisdom in a person's life. It was narrated by Masruq that he went to visit 'Aisha while Hassan bin Thabit was reciting poetry to her about a chaste wise lady who never eats the flesh of indiscreet ladies. 'Aisha then reminded him that he should not be like that either. She then quoted from (24:11) Surah An-Nur verse 11 which states "and as for him among them, who had the greater share therein, his will be a severe torment". To this she added "What punishment is more than blinding?". She also mentioned how Hassan used to defend or say poetry on behalf of Allah's Messenger against infidels. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for chastity and wisdom in our lives as it can protect us from severe punishments such as blindness or other forms of torment. We should also remember how Hassan bin Thabit defended Allah's Messenger through his poetic verses which shows us the power words can have when used correctly in defense or praise of something we believe in strongly.
