Sahih al-Bukhari 4139 (Book 64, Hadith 183) #3958
Mercy Prevails Over Punishment

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was saved from a Bedouin who had taken his sword while he was asleep, and instead of punishing him, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) showed mercy.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: We took part in the Ghazwa of Najd along with Allah's Messenger and when the time for the afternoon rest approached while he was in a valley with plenty of thorny trees, he dismounted under a tree and rested in its shade and hung his sword (on it). The people dispersed amongst the trees in order to have shade. While we were in this state, Allah's Messenger called us and we came and found a bedouin sitting in front of him. The Prophet said, "This (Bedouin) came to me while I was asleep, and he took my sword stealthily. I woke up while he was standing by my head, holding my sword without its sheath. He said, 'Who will save you from me?' I replied, 'Allah'. So he sheathed it (ie the sword) and sat down, and here he is". But Allah's Messenger did not punish him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show kindness towards those who have wronged you; Trust in God/Allah; Forgive rather than punish or take revenge on someone for their wrongdoing; Have faith that God will protect you no matter what situation you are faced with.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the mercy and kindness of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It tells us that even when someone wrongs us or takes something from us without permission we should still show them mercy and kindness. In this hadith we learn that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sleeping in a valley with plenty of trees when a Bedouin came to him and took his sword without permission. When the Prophet ﷺ woke up he saw the Bedouin standing by his head with the sword in hand. The Bedouin asked who would save him from himself but instead of getting angry or punishing him for taking his sword without permission, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied “Allah” which showed that he trusted in Allah to protect him even if it meant not punishing the man who wronged him. This teaches us to always trust in Allah no matter what situation we are faced with and also to show mercy towards those who have wronged us as it is better than punishment or revenge.
