The Importance of Eating with the Right Hand

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of eating with the right hand and avoiding arrogance.

Salamah bin Al-Akwa' (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man ate in the presence of Messenger of Allah with his left hand. He said, "Eat with your right hand". He said: "I cannot". Thereupon he (the Prophet ) said, "May you never be able to do that". It was arrogance that prevented him from doing it, and he could not raise it (the right hand) up to his mouth afterwards. Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of eating with one's right hand and avoiding arrogance. It was narrated by Salamah bin Al-Akwa', may Allah be pleased with him. In this hadith, a man ate in front of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ using his left hand. The Prophet ﷺ then asked him to eat using his right hand instead but he refused due to arrogance. As a result, he was cursed and could not raise his right hand up to his mouth afterwards. This teaches us that we should always strive to do things in a humble manner without any pride or arrogance as it can lead us astray from our faith and cause us harm in this life and hereafter. We should also remember that it is Sunnah for Muslims to eat using their right hands as it has been mentioned in many Hadiths that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to eat only with his right hands even when he was presented food on both sides of him.
