Envy Justified in Two Cases

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that envy is only justified in two cases: when someone has knowledge of the Quran and recites it regularly, or when someone has wealth and spends it regularly.

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said: "Envy is justified in regard to two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur'an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and so he spends from it during the night and during the day". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Work hard to achieve something valuable for yourself or society as a whole .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad teaches us that envy is only justified in two cases. The first case is when someone has knowledge of the Quran and recites it during both day and night. This means that if a person puts effort into learning about Islam, then others may feel envious of their knowledge. The second case is when someone has wealth and spends it during both day and night. This means that if a person works hard to earn money, then others may feel envious of their financial success. Both these cases are understandable because they involve people who have worked hard to achieve something valuable for themselves or for society as a whole. However, we should not let our envy turn into hatred or jealousy towards those who have achieved more than us; instead we should strive to work harder ourselves so that we can also achieve success in life.
