The Permissibility of Envy

SUMMARY: Envy is only allowed in two cases, when a person is given wealth and uses it properly, or when a person is given knowledge and applies it and teaches it.

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "Envy is permitted only in two cases: A man whom Allah gives wealth, and he disposes of it rightfully, and a man to whom Allah gives knowledge which he applies and teaches it". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Use what one has been blessed with for the betterment of society rather than keeping these blessings for oneself alone; Share resources; Apply Knowledge; Teach Others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that envy is only permissible in two cases. The first case being when Allah gives someone wealth and they use it properly. This means that if someone has been blessed with money, they should use it to help others or to do good deeds instead of hoarding the money for themselves. The second case being when Allah gives someone knowledge which they apply and teach to others. This means that if someone has been blessed with knowledge, they should share this knowledge with others so that everyone can benefit from their wisdom. In both cases, the focus should be on using what one has been blessed with for the betterment of society rather than keeping these blessings for oneself alone.
