Contentment with Simple Living

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was content with a simple lifestyle and did not seek worldly comforts.

'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah slept on a straw mat and got up with the marks left by it on his body. Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Would that you make us spread out a soft bedding for you". He replied, "What have I to do with the world? I am like a rider who had sat under a tree for its shade, then went away and left it". At- Tirmidhi, who classified it as Hadith Hasan Sahih.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the contentment of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his simple lifestyle. He was offered a soft bedding but he refused it as he did not want to become attached to worldly comforts. He likened himself to a rider who stops under a tree for its shade and then moves on without taking anything from it. This hadith teaches us that we should not become too attached to worldly possessions or comforts as they are temporary and will eventually pass away. We should instead focus on our spiritual journey towards Allah by being content with what we have been given in this world.
