Desiring the World and People's Possessions

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised a man to have no desire for this world and what people possess in order to be loved by Allah and the people.

Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah, guide me to such an action which, if I do Allah will love me and the people will also love me". He said, "Have no desire for this world, Allah will love you; and have no desire for what people possess, and the people will love you". Ibn Majah, Hadith Hasan.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about having no desire for this world or what people possess in order to be loved by Allah and the people. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked how he could gain love from both Allah and the people, to which he replied that one should not have any desires for worldly things or possessions of others. This means that one should not be jealous of others’ wealth, fame, or success; instead, they should focus on their own spiritual growth. It also implies that one should not seek materialistic gains as a way of gaining love from either Allah or other people. Instead, they should strive towards pleasing Allah through good deeds such as prayer, charity, fasting etc., which will ultimately lead them to gain His love as well as the love of those around them. Furthermore, it teaches us that we must put our trust in God alone rather than relying on worldly possessions for happiness and contentment.
