The Comparison of Good and Bad Company

SUMMARY: The hadith compares good company to the owner of musk, who either gives it away for free or sells it, and its pleasant fragrance can be enjoyed. Bad company is compared to the one who blows the bellows, which either burns your clothes or emits a repugnant smell.

Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet saying, "The similitude of good company and that of bad company is that of the owner of musk and of the one blowing the bellows. The owner of musk would either offer you some free of charge, or you would buy it from him, or you smell its pleasant fragrance; and as for the one who blows the bellows (ie, the blacksmith), he either burns your clothes or you smell a repugnant smell". Al- Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose your companions wisely ; Surround yourself with people who bring out positive traits within yourself ; Enjoy pleasant fragrances instead of unpleasant smells ; Benefit from good companionship instead of suffering harm from bad ones .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith compares good company to the owner of musk. It explains that when you are in good company you will benefit from it in some way; either by receiving something for free or by buying something from them. Additionally, you will enjoy its pleasant fragrance. On the other hand bad company is compared to someone blowing a bellow; this person may burn your clothes or emit a repugnant smell that is unpleasant and harmful. This hadith teaches us that we should choose our companions wisely as they can have an effect on our lives in both positive and negative ways. We should strive to surround ourselves with people who bring out the best in us and help us grow spiritually and morally rather than those who bring out negative traits such as anger or envy within us.
