The Importance of Forgiveness in Debts

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of being lenient and forgiving when it comes to debts.

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Messenger of Allah heard the voices of altercation of two disputants at the door; both the voices were quite loud. One was asking the other to make his debts little (so that he could pay them) and was pleading with him to show leniency to him, whereupon the (other one) said: "By Allah, I will not do that". Then there came Messenger of Allah to them and said, "Where is he who swore by Allah that he would not do good?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is me. Now he may do as he desires". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards those who owe you something; forgive them if they are unable to pay back what they owe right away; never swear by Allah not doing good; remain humble in all situations; practice patience when dealing with difficult situations like these ones involving debts .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of being lenient and forgiving when it comes to debts. It is narrated by Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet Muhammad heard two people arguing at his door about a debt one owed to another. The debtor was asking for leniency and pleading for his debt to be reduced so he could pay it off, but the other person refused and swore by Allah that he would not do good. Upon hearing this, Prophet Muhammad asked who had sworn by Allah not to do good and upon finding out it was him, he told him that he could do as he desired. This teaches us an important lesson; even if someone owes us money or something else we should still show them mercy and forgive them if they are unable to pay back what they owe us right away. We should also remember that no matter how much someone owes us we should never swear by Allah not to do good because this is a major sin in Islam.
