Breaking Oaths for the Sake of Piety

SUMMARY: It is better to do something that brings one closer to Allah than to fulfill an oath if a better option is found.

'Adi bin Hatim At-Ta'i (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "He who has taken an oath (to do something) but found something else better than that (which brings him closer to Allah), then he should do that which is better in piety (and he should expiate for the breaking of oath)". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for piety and righteousness, Keep promises and vows
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us that it is better to do something that brings us closer to Allah than fulfilling an oath if a better option is found. We should always strive for piety and righteousness, even if it means breaking our promises or vows. In such cases, we must make amends by offering atonement or expiation in order to be forgiven by Allah. This hadith encourages us not only to keep our promises but also prioritize doing what pleases Allah over anything else.
