Seeking Refuge with Allah from Satan

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught a man to seek refuge with Allah from Satan in order to calm his anger.

Sulaiman bin Surad (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was sitting with the Prophet when two men began to quarrel and curse each other and the face of one of them turned red and the veins of his neck were swollen (from rage). Messenger of Allah said, "I know of a word, if he were to utter that, his rage would vanish and that is: A'udhu billahi minash-Shaitan nir-rajim (I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed)". So they (Companions) said to him: "The Prophet tells you to utter: 'I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of seeking refuge with Allah from Satan when one is feeling angry. It was narrated by Sulaiman bin Surad, who reported that he was sitting with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when two men began to quarrel and curse each other and the face of one of them turned red and the veins of his neck were swollen. The Prophet ﷺ then said that if he were to utter “A’udhu billahi minash-Shaitan nir-rajim”, which translates as “I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed”, his rage would vanish. This hadith teaches us that we should always remember to seek refuge in God whenever we are feeling angry or overwhelmed by our emotions. We should also remember that it is important not to let our anger get out of control as it can lead us into doing things we may regret later on. We should take a moment and reflect on what we are feeling before taking any action so that we can make sure our actions are guided by wisdom rather than emotion.
