Riyad as-Salihin 1827 (Book 18, Hadith 20) #38316
Judgement of Prophets Dawud and Sulaiman

SUMMARY: This hadith is about two women who took their dispute to Prophet Dawud and Prophet Sulaiman for judgement. The judgement of Prophet Sulaiman was that the child should be given to the younger woman.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "There were two women, each had her child with her. A wolf came and took away the child of one of them. One woman said to her companion: 'The wolf has taken your son'. The other said: 'It has taken your son'. So both of them took the dispute to Prophet Dawud (David) who judged that the boy should be given to the older lady. Then they went to Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) son of Dawud and put the case before him. Prophet Sulaiman said: 'Give me a knife so that I may cut the child into two and give one half to each of you'. The younger woman said: 'Do not do so; may Allah bless you! He is her child'. On that Prophet Sulaiman decided the case in favour of the younger woman". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Show mercy towards others even if they are not related or do not belong from your family/community; Strive for peace instead of resorting violence; Uphold justice at all times; Respect decisions made by prophets/elders/leaders etc.; Follow laws set by prophets etc.; Respect other people's opinions etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about two women who were in a dispute over a child. They took their case to Prophet Dawud and then to his son, Prophet Sulaiman, for judgement. When they presented their case before Prophet Sulaiman, he suggested cutting the child into two halves so that each woman could have one half. However, the younger woman refused this suggestion and said that it was her child. Upon hearing this, Prophet Sulaiman decided in favour of the younger woman as she showed mercy towards her companion's son by not wanting him to be cut in half. This hadith teaches us that justice should always prevail but at the same time we must also show mercy towards others even if they are not related to us or do not belong to our family or community. It also teaches us that we should always strive for peace instead of resorting to violence when faced with disputes or disagreements between people.
