Riyad as-Salihin 1826 (Book 18, Hadith 19) #38315
Resolving Disputes Through Generosity

SUMMARY: A man bought a piece of land from another man and found a jar filled with gold in the land. The buyer offered to return the gold to the seller, but the seller insisted that he had sold everything in the land. To resolve their dispute, they took their case before a third man who suggested that they marry their children and use the money for them, with any remaining funds given to charity.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "A man bought a piece of land from another man, and the buyer found a jar filled with gold in the land. The buyer said to the seller: 'Take your gold, as I bought only the land from you and not the gold'. The owner of the land said: 'I sold you the land with everything in it'. So both of them took their case before a third man who asked: 'Have you any children?' One of them said: 'I have a boy'. The other said, 'I have a girl'. The man said: 'Marry the girl to the boy and spend the money on them; and whatever remains give it in charity"'. Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous when resolving disputes; Respectfully resolve conflicts; Give what you can in charity; Marry off your children if possible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about resolving disputes through generosity. Two men were arguing over ownership of some gold found on a piece of land one of them had purchased from the other. They took their case before a third person who suggested that they marry off their children and use any money left over for charity. This teaches us that it is important to be generous when resolving disputes, as it can help bring people together rather than drive them apart. It also shows us how important marriage is in Islam, as it can be used as an effective way to resolve conflicts between two parties while also providing financial security for both families involved. Finally, this hadith reminds us of our duty towards charity; even if we have little left after settling our own affairs, we should still give what we can in order to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
