Compassion for Animals

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to be kind and compassionate to animals, even if it means going out of our way.

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah in a journey when he drew apart (to relieve nature). In his absence, we saw a red bird which had two young ones with it. We caught them and the red mother bird came, beating the earth with its wings. In the meantime the Prophet returned and said, "Who has put this bird to distress on account of its young? Return them to her". He also noticed a mound of ants which we had burnt up. He asked, "Who has set fire to this?" We replied: "We have done so". He said, "None can chastise with fire except the Rabb of the fire". Abu Dawud.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind and compassionate towards animals; Return birds or other creatures back into nature; Respect Allah's creations; Follow instructions from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being kind and compassionate towards animals. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was on a journey with his companions when they saw a red bird with two young ones. They caught them, but the mother bird came back and started beating the ground with its wings in distress. When the Prophet ﷺ returned, he asked who had caused this distress and told them to return the birds to their mother. He also noticed that they had set fire to an ant mound, so he reminded them that only Allah has authority over fire. This teaches us that we should be kind and merciful towards all creatures in nature, even if it means going out of our way or inconveniencing ourselves in some way. We should remember that Allah is watching us at all times and will reward us for our good deeds towards His creation.
