Prohibiting Men from Wearing Silk and Gold

SUMMARY: Wearing of silk and gold is prohibited for men in the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) but allowed for women.

Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "The wearing of silk and gold has been made unlawful for males of my Ummah and lawful for the females". At-Tirmidhi.
وعن أبى موسى الأشعرى رضى الله عنه أن رسول الله قال‏:‏ ‏ "‏حرم لباس الحرير والذهب على ذكور أمتي ،وأحل لإناثهم‏"‏.‏((رواه الترمذي))

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the clothing regulations set by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). According to this hadith, wearing of silk and gold has been made unlawful for males in his Ummah while it is lawful for females. This prohibition was set to prevent men from imitating women's clothing styles which were considered inappropriate at that time. The values taught by this hadith are modesty and humility as well as respect towards Islamic laws. It also teaches us that we should not try to imitate others or follow trends blindly without considering their appropriateness according to our religion.
