Sunan Ibn Majah 172 (Book) #37074
The Importance of Justice

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of justice and how those who do not practice it will not be successful in their faith.

It was narrated from Abu Zubair that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah was in Ji'ranah and he was distributing gold nuggets and spoils of war which were in Bilal's lap. A man said: 'Do justice, O Muhammed!' He said: 'Woe to you! Who will do justice after me if I do not do justice?' 'Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite!' The Messenger of Allah said: 'This man has some companions who recite the Qur'an but it does not go any deeper than their collarbones. They will pass through Islam like an arrow passing through its target'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness and equality in all aspects of life.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of justice in Islam. It was narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah that the Prophet Muhammad was distributing gold nuggets and spoils of war when a man said to him "Do justice, O Muhammed!" In response to this statement, the Prophet Muhammad said "Woe to you! Who will do justice after me if I do not do justice?" This shows that he believed it was his responsibility as a leader to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and justly. Furthermore, Umar wanted to punish the man for his words but the Prophet Muhammad stopped him from doing so because he knew there were people who claimed to be Muslims but did not practice what they preached. He warned them that they would pass through Islam like an arrow passing through its target if they did not act justly. This hadith teaches us that we must strive for fairness and equality in all aspects of our lives if we want our faith to be successful.
