The Three Pillars of Faith

SUMMARY: Faith is a combination of knowledge, words and actions.

It was narrated that 'Ali bin Abu Talib said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Faith is knowledge in the heart, words on the tongue and action with the physical faculties. (limbs of the body)'." (Maudu')
حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي سَهْلٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ السَّلاَمِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ أَبُو الصَّلْتِ الْهَرَوِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُوسَى الرِّضَا، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ الإِيمَانُ مَعْرِفَةٌ بِالْقَلْبِ وَقَوْلٌ بِاللِّسَانِ وَعَمَلٌ بِالأَرْكَانِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو الصَّلْتِ لَوْ قُرِئَ هَذَا الإِسْنَادُ عَلَى مَجْنُونٍ لَبَرَأَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the three pillars of faith which are knowledge, words and actions. Knowledge refers to understanding the teachings of Islam in one's heart. Words refer to speaking out about one's faith such as reciting the Quran or making duas. Lastly, action refers to performing good deeds with one's physical faculties such as helping others or praying five times a day. All three components are essential for having true faith in Allah SWT and His Messenger ﷺ.
