Responding to Blessings with Gratitude

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar responded to someone saying "May Allah have mercy on you" by saying "May Allah have mercy on us and you, and forgive us and you".

Malik related to me from Nafi that when Abdullah ibn Umar sneezed and someone said to him, "May Allah have mercy on you," (Yarhamuka'llah), he said, "May Allah have mercy on us and you, and forgive us and you". (Yarhamuna'llah wa yaghfirlana wa lakum).

QUICK LESSONS:
Show gratitude for blessings received from others.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about responding to blessings with gratitude. Abdullah ibn Umar was sneezed at, and when someone said “May Allah have mercy on you” he responded by saying “May Allah have mercy on us and you, and forgive us and you”. This teaches us that we should be grateful for the blessings we receive from others, even if it is something as small as a blessing after a sneeze. We should also remember that we are not the only ones who need God's mercy or forgiveness; everyone does! We should always strive to show our gratitude for the kindness of others in whatever way possible.
