Finding Lost Objects

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when one finds an object, they should publicize it for a year and if the owner does not come forward, then the finder can keep it. He also taught that lost sheep belong to either the finder or their brother, while lost camels are not of concern as they will eventually reach water and eat trees until its owner finds it.

Malik related to me from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman from Yazid, the mawla of al-Munbaith that Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani said, "A man came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and asked him about finds. He said, 'Memorize the characteristics of the object found, then publicize it for a year. If the owner comes, give it to him. If not, then it is your business'. He said, 'What about lost sheep, Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'They are yours, your brother's or the wolf's'. He said, 'And the lost camel?' He said, 'It's none of your concern. It has its water and its feet. It will reach water and eat trees until its owner finds it'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Memorise characteristics & publicise for a year when you find an object .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to handle finding objects in our daily lives. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed us to memorise the characteristics of any object we find and then publicise it for a year so that if its rightful owner comes forward, we can give it back to them. If no one claims ownership after a year has passed, then we can keep it as our own property. In regards to lost sheep or camels however, he said that these belong either to us or our brother but with regards to camels specifically he said they are none of our concern as they will eventually reach water and eat trees until their owners come looking for them. This hadith teaches us values such as honesty and responsibility in taking care of other people's belongings even if we do not know who owns them yet. It also encourages us not be too concerned with things which are out of our control such as lost animals which may take some time before being found by their owners again.
