Inheritance and Lodging

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar inherited the house of Hafsa bint Umar after she gave lodging to the daughter of Zayd ibn al-Khattab.

Malik related to me from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar inherited the house of Hafsa bint Umar. He said, "Hafsa gave lodging to the daughter of Zayd ibn al-Khattab for as long as she lived. When the daughter of Zayd died, Abdullah ibn Umar took possession of the dwelling and considered that it was his".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and kind towards others in our lives. Respect Islamic law regarding inheritance when someone passes away.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about inheritance and lodging. It tells us that when the daughter of Zayd ibn al-Khattab died, Abdullah ibn Umar took possession of her house which was given to her by Hafsa bint Umar for as long as she lived. This shows us that it is important to be generous and kind towards others in our lives because we never know what will happen in the future. We should also remember that when someone passes away their possessions are passed on to their heirs according to Islamic law known as warith (وَارِث). In this case, it was Abdullah Ibn Omar who inherited the house from his aunt Hafsa Bint Omar after she passed away.
