The Importance of Keeping Oaths

SUMMARY: This hadith emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's oaths and promises, even if they are small.

Malik related to me from al-Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman from Mabad ibn Kab as-Salami from his brother Abdullah ibn Kab ibn Malik al-Ansari from Abu Umama that: the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Whoever cuts off the right of a muslim man by his oath, Allah forbids him the Garden and obliges the Fire for him". They said, "Even if it is something insignificant, Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Even if it is a tooth-stick, even if it is a tooth- stick," repeating it three times.

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your word no matter how insignificant it may seem
EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasizes the importance of keeping one's oaths and promises. He explains that if a Muslim does not fulfill their promise or oath to another Muslim - even if it is something small like a toothpick - then Allah will forbid them from entering Paradise and oblige them to enter Hellfire instead. This hadith teaches us that we must be honest in our dealings with others and keep our word no matter how insignificant it may seem. We should strive to be trustworthy people who can be relied upon by others so that we can earn Allah's pleasure in this life and the next.
