Paying Off Loans Immediately

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar disliked and forbade the act of paying off a loan immediately when the creditor reduces the debt.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Uthman ibn Hafs ibn Khalda from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah that Abdullah ibn Umar was asked about a man who took a loan from another man for a set term. The creditor reduced the debt, and the man paid it immediately Abdullah ibn Umar disliked that, and forbade it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully honor agreements made with others , Be grateful for generosity shown by creditors

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about taking loans from other people and how to pay them back. According to this hadith narrated by Yahya from Malik from Uthman ibn Hafs ibn Khalda from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah that Abdullah Ibn Umar was asked about a man who took a loan for a set term. The creditor reduced the debt and the man paid it immediately. In response to this situation, Abdullah Ibn Umar disliked it and forbade it. This hadith teaches us that we should not take advantage of someone's kindness by paying off our debts too quickly when they reduce them for us as this is considered disrespectful towards them. We should instead be grateful for their generosity and pay back our debts in due time as agreed upon in order to maintain good relationships with others.
