The Kaffara of Dhihar

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab ordered a man not to go near a woman he had made haram for himself until he had done the kaffara for pronouncing dhihar.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Said ibn Amr ibn Sulaym az- Zuraqi that he asked al-Qasim ibn Muhammad about a man who made divorce conditional on his marrying a woman ie if he married her he would automatically divorce her. Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad said, "If a man marries a woman whom he has made as his mother's back, ie has made haram for him, Umar ibn al-Khattab ordered him not to go near her if he married her until he had done the kaffara for pronouncing dhihar".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take responsibility and repent when you have wronged someone else or yourself in order to make amends and restore balance in your lives .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the kaffara of dhihar. Dhihar is when someone says something that makes something or someone haram for them. In this case, it was a man who said that if he married a certain woman then she would be haram for him. Umar ibn al-Khattab ordered him not to go near her if he married her until he had done the kaffara for pronouncing dhihar. The kaffara is an act of repentance and atonement in order to make up for any wrongdoings or sins committed by an individual. It can involve acts such as fasting, charity work or pilgrimage depending on what has been committed and how severe it was. This hadith teaches us that we should take responsibility and repent when we have wronged someone else or ourselves in order to make amends and restore balance in our lives.
