The Desirability of Aqiqa

SUMMARY: The aqiqa is desirable even if it is only a small amount.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman that Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith at-Taymi said, "I heard my father say that the aqiqa was desirable, even if it was only a sparrow".

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform an Aqeeqah when possible even if it's only with something small like a sparrow.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the desirability of performing an aqiqa. An aqiqa is an animal sacrifice that is done when a baby is born and it can be done with any type of animal such as sheep or goats. However, this hadith states that even if one cannot afford to do the sacrifice with an expensive animal like sheep or goat, they should still perform the sacrifice with something small like a sparrow. This shows us that Allah does not expect us to do something beyond our means but rather encourages us to do what we can within our means and He will reward us for it accordingly. It also teaches us the importance of being generous and giving charity even if it may seem insignificant in comparison to others’ acts of charity.
