(Book 14, Hadith 3) #35509
Facing Qibla and Bayt Al-Maqdis While Relieving Oneself

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) relieving himself while facing the Bayt al-Maqdis, and Abdullah ibn Umar's response to people who say one should not face the qibla or Bayt al-Maqdis when relieving oneself.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban from his paternal uncle, Wasi ibn Habban, that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "People say, 'When you sit to relieve yourself, do not face the qibla or the Bayt al-Maqdis'. " Abdullah continued, "I went upon top of a house of ours and saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, (squatting) on two unfired bricks facing the Bayt al-Maqdis, relieving himself". Ibn Umar added, "Perhaps you are one of those who pray folded on their haunches". Wasi replied, "I don't know, by Allah!"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how one should behave when they are relieving themselves. It was narrated by Yahya Ibn Said from Malik from Yahya Ibn Said from Muhammad Ibn Yahya Ibn Habban from his paternal uncle Wasi Ibn Habban that Abdullah Ibn Umar said that people say that one should not face the qibla or the Bayt Al Maqdis when they are relieving themselves. However, Abdullah went on top of a house of theirs and saw Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) squatting on two unfired bricks facing towards the Bayt Al Maqdis while he was relieving himself. This shows us that it is permissible to face either direction while we are in this situation as long as we do not disrespect either direction out of reverence for Allah SWT and His House. We must also remember to be modest in our behavior at all times even if no one else can see us because Allah SWT sees all things at all times.
