Musnad Ahmad 1370 (Book 5, Hadith 769) #34995
Changing Names According to Divine Command

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad changed the names of Ali's two sons, Hasan and Husain, after they were born.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: When al-Hasan was born, I named him Hamzah. When al-Husain was born, I named him after his paternal uncle Ja'far. Then the Messenger of Allah called me and said: 'I have been commanded to change the names of these two'. I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. And he named them Hasan and Husain. (رضي الله عنهما)

QUICK LESSONS:
Accepting divine commands without hesitation or doubt

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad changed the names of Ali's two sons, Hasan and Husain. It was narrated that 'Ali said that when his first son was born he named him Hamzah but when his second son was born he named him after his paternal uncle Ja'far. Then the Messenger of Allah called 'Ali and told him that he had been commanded to change their names. 'Ali accepted this command without hesitation as it came from Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet then renamed them Hasan and Husain respectively. This hadith teaches us to accept commands from Allah and His Messenger without hesitation or doubt as it is for our own benefit in this life and in the hereafter. We should also remember that whatever name we give our children should be pleasing to God so we can seek His blessings upon them throughout their lives.
