Avoiding Second Glances

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised 'Ali not to look at something twice, as the first glance may be allowed but not the second.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah said to me: "Do not follow one glance with another; you may be allowed the first but not the second'.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَا تُتْبِعْ النَّظَرَ النَّظَرَ فَإِنَّ الْأُولَى لَكَ وَلَيْسَتْ لَكَ الْأَخِيرَةُ‏.‏

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad is advising his companion 'Ali to avoid looking at something twice. We should also remember that Allah has given us permission for certain things, but only within limits and boundaries set by Him.
