Musnad Ahmad 1262 (Book 5, Hadith 668) #34894
The Importance of Praying Witr

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged Muslims to pray Witr, a voluntary prayer, as it is pleasing to Allah.

It was narrated that 'Asim bin Damrah as-Salooli said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: Verily, Witr is not a must like your prescribed prayers, but the Messenger of Allah prayed Witr, then he said: "Pray Witr, O people of the Qur'an. Pray Witr, for Allah is One and loves that which is odd numbered".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray witr regularly
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages Muslims to pray the voluntary prayer known as Witr. It was narrated by 'Asim bin Damrah as-Salooli that Ali said that the Prophet Muhammad said that praying Witr is not obligatory like other prayers, but it is recommended and pleasing to Allah. He also said that “Pray Witr, O people of the Qur'an. Pray Witr, for Allah is One and loves that which is odd numbered”. This means that since God is one and unique in His nature, He likes things which are odd in number such as three or five instead of two or four. Therefore praying an odd number of rakats during witr prayer pleases Him more than an even number does.
