Musnad Ahmad 1255 (Book 5, Hadith 661) #34887
The Prophet's Prediction and 'Ali's Identification

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet's prediction of a group of people who will speak the truth but not act upon it, and how 'Ali identified them by finding a man with a deformed arm.

It was narrated that Tariq bin Ziyad said: 'Ali marched to an-Nahrawan and killed the Khawarij. Then he said: Look, for the Prophet said: 'There will come a people who will speak the word of truth but it will not go any further than their throats; they will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes out of the prey. Their sign - or among them - will be a black man with a deformed arm, on which there are black hairs. If he is among them, then you will have killed the worst of people; if he is not among them, then you will have killed the best of people". Then we found the one with the deformity, and we fell down in prostration and 'Ali fell down in prostration with us. .

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow your leader, Strive for good deeds, Act upon your words instead of just speaking them out loud .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's prediction that there would be a group of people who would speak the truth but not act upon it. He said that they could be identified by looking for someone with a deformed arm and black hair on it. When 'Ali marched to an-Nahrawan, he found this person and fell down in prostration along with his companions as they realized that this was indeed the group predicted by the Prophet. This hadith teaches us to always strive to do good deeds even if we are speaking words of truth, as words alone are not enough to make us righteous in God’s eyes. It also shows us how important it is for Muslims to follow their leaders, as 'Ali was able to identify these people due to his knowledge from the Prophet’s teachings.
