Praying Witr at Night

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to pray Witr at the beginning, middle and end of the night, but eventually settled on praying it at the end.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah used to pray Witr at the beginning of the night, in the middle and at the end, then he settled on praying Witr at the end of the night.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يُوتِرُ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ وَفِي أَوْسَطِهِ وَفِي آخِرِهِ ثُمَّ ثَبَتَ لَهُ الْوَتْرُ فِي آخِرِهِ‏.‏
