Naming Children After the Fashion of Haroon's Sons

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) named Ali's sons Hasan, Husain and Muhassin after the fashion of the sons of Haroon.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: When al-Hasan was born, the Messenger of Allah came and said: "Show me my son; what did you name him?' I said: I named him Harb which means 'war'. He said: 'Rather he is Hasan". When al-Husain was born, he said: 'Show me my son; what did you name him?' I said: I named him Harb, He said: 'Rather he is Husain". When the third one was born, the Prophet said: 'Show me my son; what did you name him?' I said: Harb, He said: "Rather. he is Muhassin". Then he said: "I have named them after the fashion of the sons of Haroon, Shabbar and Shabeer and Mushabbir".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give children meaningful names .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad PBUH named Ali’s three sons. When Ali’s first son was born, he wanted to name him ‘Harb’ which means war in Arabic. However, Prophet Muhammad PBUH said that his name should be Hasan instead. Similarly, when his second son was born he wanted to name him ‘Harb’ but Prophet Muhammad PBUH said that his name should be Husain instead. Finally, when his third son was born he again wanted to name him ‘Harb’ but this time Prophet Muhammad PBUH said that his name should be Muhassin instead and explained why by saying that it is similar to how the sons of Haroon were named - Shabbar, Shabeer and Mushabbir respectively. This hadith teaches us about the importance of giving our children meaningful names as well as being mindful about what we call them since it can have a lasting impact on their lives and personalities in future years.
