Musnad Ahmad 898 (Book 5, Hadith 327) #34553
The Promise of Paradise for Umar bin al Khattab

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) predicting that Umar bin al Khattab will be joined with Abu Bakr and himself in Paradise.

It was narrated from Ibn Abu Mulaikah that he heard Ibn 'Abbas say: When 'Umar bin al Khattab (رضي الله عنه) was placed on his bier, the people gathered around him, praying and invoking blessings upon him before the bier was lifted up, and I was among them. No one alarmed me except a man who seized me by the shoulder from behind. I turned and saw that it was 'Ali bin Abi Talib He prayed for mercy for 'Umar (رضي الله عنه), then he said: You have not left behind anyone more dear to me, with the like of whose deeds I would hope to meet Allah, than you. By Allah, I think that Allah will most certainly join you to your two companions, and that is because I often heard the Messenger of Allah saying, 'Abu Bakr, 'Umar and I went; Abu Bakr, 'Umar and I came in; Abu Bakr, 'Umar and I went out". So I think that Allah will most certainly join you to them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the promise of paradise for Umar bin al Khattab, one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad. It was narrated by Ibn Abu Mulaikah who heard it from Ibn 'Abbas. When Umar was placed on his bier, people gathered around him to pray and invoke blessings upon him before he was lifted up. At this time, Ali bin Abi Talib came and prayed for mercy for Umar then said that no one else has left behind such deeds as those of Umar's which would make Allah pleased with him. He then mentioned a saying from the Prophet Muhammad that he, Abu Bakr and Umar went together in many places which made Ali believe that Allah will join them all together in paradise after their death. This hadith teaches us to strive to do good deeds so we can be rewarded by Allah in paradise after our death just like how it happened with Umar bin al Khattab.
