Musnad Ahmad 690 (Book 5, Hadith 123) #34349
Listening Before Judging

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised 'Ali (??? ???? ???) to listen to both sides of a dispute before making a judgement.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Prophet said to me".When two disputants come to you, do not listen to the words of the first one until you have also listened to the words of the other, then you will know how to judge'. And 'Ali (رضي الله عنها) said: Since then I have continued to be a good judge.

QUICK LESSONS:
Listen carefully and objectively before making any decisions or judgements.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of listening before judging. It was narrated by 'Ali that the Prophet said to him "When two disputants come to you, do not listen to the words of the first one until you have also listened to the words of the other, then you will know how to judge." This means that it is important for us not only hear one side of an argument but also take into account what both parties are saying in order for us make an informed decision. Since then 'Ali has been known as a good judge because he followed this advice and listened carefully before making his judgements. We can learn from this hadith that it is important for us all to be fair and impartial when we are faced with disputes or disagreements between people. We should always strive for justice and fairness by listening carefully and objectively before making any decisions or judgements.
