Musnad Ahmad 379 (Book 2, Hadith 280) #34055
The Superiority of Hajj and 'Umrah over Jihad

SUMMARY: Doing Hajj and 'Umrah is a better deed than going for Jihad.

It was narrated from Subayy bin Ma'bad that he was a Taghlibi Christian, then he became Muslim and asked which deed is best? He was told: Jihad for the sake of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. He wanted to go for jihad. but he was asked: Have you done Hajj? He said. #It was said to him: Do Hajj and 'Umrah, then go for jihad. So he entered ihram for both of them together, then he met Zaid bin Soohan and Salman bin Rabee'ah who said: He is more misguided than his camel, or he is no more guided than his camel, He went to 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) and told him what they had said, and he said: You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet , or to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah .

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform both Hajj & Umra before going for Jihad; Respect other people's opinions even if you disagree with them; Follow Islamic teachings; Show piety & patience in all matters; Obey Allah & His Messenger (ﷺ) .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the superiority of performing Hajj and 'Umrah over going for jihad. Subayy bin Ma'bad was a Taghlibi Christian who converted to Islam and asked which deed is best? He was told that jihad for the sake of Allah is best, but he was then advised to do both Hajj and 'Umrah before going for jihad. When he did so, he met Zaid bin Soohan and Salman bin Rabee'ah who said that he was more misguided than his camel or no more guided than his camel. He then went to Umar who told him that what he did followed the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . This hadith teaches us that although jihad is an important act, it should not be done without first performing both Hajj and 'Umrah as they are superior deeds in Islam. It also teaches us to respect other people's opinions even if we disagree with them as Umar respected Zaid's opinion even though it wasn't correct according to Islamic teachings.
