Allocating Wealth for Jihad

SUMMARY: The wealth of Banun-Nadeer was given to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Allah and he allocated some of it for his family's maintenance and used the rest to prepare for jihad.

It was narrated that Malik bin Aws said: 'Umar sent for me. and he mentioned a similar hadeeth. He said: The wealth of Banun-Nadeer was among the fai' that Allah granted to His Messenger for which the Muslims made no expedition with either cavalry or camelry (cf. al-Hashr 59:6). He allocated some of it for his family's maintenance for one year, and what was left he spent on horses and weapons in preparation for jihad for the sake of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted.
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ، قَالَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَقَالَ إِنَّ أَمْوَالَ بَنِي النَّضِيرِ كَانَتْ مِمَّا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ مِمَّا لَمْ يُوجِفْ عَلَيْهِ الْمُسْلِمُونَ بِخَيْلٍ وَلَا رِكَابٍ فَكَانَ يُنْفِقُ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ مِنْهَا نَفَقَةَ سَنَةٍ وَمَا بَقِيَ جَعَلَهُ فِي الْكُرَاعِ وَالسِّلَاحِ عُدَّةً فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ‏.‏

Additionally, this hadith reminds us that we should always be prepared spiritually and physically when engaging in any form of jihad or struggle against injustice.
