Musnad Ahmad 281 (Book 2, Hadith 191) #33966
The Repercussions of Taking Back Charity

SUMMARY: Taking back charity is like a dog going back to its vomit.

It was narrated that 'Umar bin al-Khattab said: I gave a horse for the sake of Allah, but its owner neglected it. I thought that he would sell it for a cheap price, but I said to myself, not until I ask the Messenger of Allah about that. He said: "Do not buy it even if he gives it to you for a dirham, for the one who takes back his charity is like the dog that goes back to its vomit".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of charity and how it should not be taken back. It was narrated by 'Umar bin al-Khattab that he gave a horse for the sake of Allah, but its owner neglected it. He thought that he would sell it for a cheap price, but then decided to ask the Messenger of Allah about it first. The Prophet said that one should not buy it even if he gives it for a dirham because taking back charity is like the dog that goes back to its vomit. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about charity and how we should not take advantage of people who are in need or take our donations back after giving them away as this is considered wrong in Islam and likened to an animal's behavior which is considered disgusting in society.
