Musnad Ahmad 274 (Book 2, Hadith 186) #33961
Showing Respect to the Black Stone

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Umar kissing the Black Stone and showing respect to it, as he saw Prophet Muhammad do the same.

It was narrated that Suwaid bin Ghafalah said: I saw 'Umar kiss the Black Stone and say: I know that you are a stone and cannot cause harm or bring benefit, but I saw Abul-Qasim show respect to you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Showing respect for things even if they cannot help us in any way. Following in Prophet Muhammad's footsteps and taking him as an example of how we should live our lives.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of Umar's respect for the Black Stone, which is a part of the Kaaba in Makkah. He kissed it and said that he knew it was just a stone and could not cause harm or bring benefit, but he still showed respect to it because he saw Prophet Muhammad do so. This teaches us that we should show respect for things even if they are not able to help us in any way. We should also follow in Prophet Muhammad's footsteps and take him as an example of how we should live our lives.
