The Forbidden Oath of Swearing by Fathers

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warning Umar not to swear by his father.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said; 'Umar said: I was walking with a group of people during a campaign I went on with the Messenger of Allah and I swore an oath, saying, No, by my father. A man behind me rebuked me for that and said: "Do not swear by your fathers," I turned around and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah .
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُنْتُ فِي رَكْبٍ أَسِيرُ فِي غَزَاةٍ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ فَحَلَفْتُ فَقُلْتُ لَا وَأَبِي فَنَهَرَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَلْفِي وَقَالَ لَا تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's warning to Umar not to swear by his father. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said; 'Umar said he was walking with a group of people during a campaign he went on with the Messenger of Allah and he swore an oath saying "No, by my father". A man behind him rebuked him for that and said "Do not swear by your fathers". Umar then turned around and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should never swear or take an oath in God's name or in our parents' names as it is forbidden in Islam. We should always remember to respect our parents and show them gratitude for all they have done for us. We should also strive to follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad as much as possible so we can be closer to God and live a life full of blessings from Him.
