Contentment in Successorship

SUMMARY: Abu Bakr was content with being the successor of the Messenger of Allah.

It was narrated that Ibn Abi Mulaikah said. It was said to Abu Bakr: O Khaleefah (caliph) of Allah. He said: I am the Khaleefah (lit. successor) of the Messenger of Allah and I am pleased with that.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُمَرَ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، قَالَ قِيلَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَا خَلِيفَةَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَنَا خَلِيفَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَأَنَا رَاضٍ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَاضٍ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَاضٍ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of contentment and acceptance when it comes to successorship. It was narrated that Ibn Abi Mulaikah said that Abu Bakr was addressed as “O Khaleefah of Allah” and he responded by saying “I am the Khaleefah of the Messenger of Allah and I am pleased with that”. This hadith teaches us to be content with our roles in life and accept them as they are given to us by God. We should not strive for more than what is given to us but rather be thankful for what we have been blessed with. Furthermore, this hadith also speaks about how important it is for us to respect those who have been chosen by God for a certain role or position in life such as a leader or caliph. We should recognize their authority and accept their decisions without question or hesitation.
