Musnad Ahmad 30 (Book 1, Hadith 30) #33728
Taking Responsibility for Wrongdoing

SUMMARY: People should take responsibility for their own actions and not allow wrongdoers to go unpunished, or else Allah will punish them all.

It was narrated that Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq said: O people, you recite this verse: 'O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the (right) guidance and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden) no hurt can come to you from those who are in error' al-Ma’idah 5:105. I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "If the people see an evildoer and do not stop him, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about taking responsibility for our own actions and the consequences of those actions. It was narrated by Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq that the Messenger of Allah said that if people see an evildoer and do not stop him, then Allah will send His punishment upon them all. This means that we must take care of ourselves by following the right guidance and enjoining what is right, while also forbidding what is wrong. If we do this, then no harm can come to us from those who are in error. However, if we fail to do this then Allah will punish us all for allowing wrongdoers to go unpunished. This hadith teaches us that it is important to be responsible citizens who take action against wrongdoing in order to protect ourselves from divine punishment.
