Sunan Ibn Majah 3989 (Book 36, Hadith 64) #33344
The Virtue of Humility

SUMMARY: Allah loves those who are humble and righteous, and warns against showing off and enmity towards friends of Allah.

It was narrated from 'Umar bin Khattab that he went out one day to the mosque of the Messenger of Allah , and he found Mu’adh bin Jabal sitting by the grave of the Prophet , weeping. He said: "Why are you weeping?" He said: "I am weeping because of something that I heard from the Messenger of Allah . I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'A little showing off is polytheism and whoever shows enmity towards a friend of Allah has declared war on Allah. Allah loves those who se righteousness and piety are hidden, those who, if they are absent, are not missed, and if they are present, they are not invited or acknowledged. Their hearts are lamps of guidance and they get out of every trial and difficulty.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of humility in our lives. It is narrated from 'Umar bin Khattab that he went out one day to the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, and he found Muadh bin Jabal sitting by the grave of the Prophet, weeping. When asked why he was weeping, Muadh said that he was crying because he had heard a saying from the Messenger of Allah which stated that a little bit of showing off is considered polytheism. Furthermore, it was said that whoever shows enmity towards a friend of Allah has declared war on Him. The hadith then goes on to say that Allah loves those who are humble and righteous; those who if they are absent are not missed or acknowledged when present. Their hearts are lamps for guidance in times difficulty and trials.

This hadith teaches us about humility as an important virtue in our lives; it warns us against showing off or being hostile towards friends of God as this will lead us away from His love instead bringing us closer to Him through righteousness and piety which should be kept hidden so we can be guided by our hearts during difficult times.
