Sahih al-Bukhari 3472 (Book 60, Hadith 139) #3317
Resolving Disputes Through Marriage and Charity

SUMMARY: A man bought a piece of land from another man and found gold in it. The buyer offered to return the gold, but the seller insisted that he had sold the land with everything in it. To resolve their dispute, they took their case before a third person who suggested that they marry off their children and use the money for them and charity.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "A man bought a piece of land from another man, and the buyer found an earthenware jar filled with gold in the land. The buyer said to the seller'.Take your gold, as I have bought only the land from you, but I have not bought the gold from you'. The (former) owner of the land said, "I have sold you the land with everything in it'. So both of them took their case before a man who asked, 'Do you have children?' One of them said, "I have a boy'. The other said, "I have a girl'. The man said, 'Marry the girl to the boy and spend the money on both of them and give the rest of it in charity'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about resolving disputes between two people through marriage and charity. It was narrated by Abu Huraira, who reported that Allah's Messenger said that a man bought a piece of land from another man, but when he went to inspect it he found an earthenware jar filled with gold inside. The buyer offered to return the gold as he had only purchased the land, but the seller insisted that he had sold him everything inside too. To resolve this dispute they took their case before a third person who suggested marrying off their children with each other and using some of the money for them while giving away some in charity as well. This solution was accepted by both parties as it allowed them to settle their disagreement without any further conflict or animosity between them. This hadith teaches us several values such as being generous towards others, resolving disputes peacefully through compromise rather than violence or aggression, taking responsibility for our actions even if we are not at fault, being mindful of our words when making agreements or contracts so there is no confusion later on etc..
