Kindness in Response to Curses

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) responded to the Jews who greeted him with a curse by returning the greeting with kindness.

It was narrated from Aishah that some of the Jews came to the Prophet and said: "Assam o alaika (death be upon you), O Abul-Qasim!" He said: "Wa 'alayikum (and also upon you)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond kindly even when someone has been unkind towards us.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how we should respond when someone greets us with a curse. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was once greeted by some Jews with the words "Assam o alaika" which translates to "death be upon you". Instead of responding in kind, he replied back with "Wa 'alayikum", which translates to "and also upon you". By doing this, he showed that it is better to respond kindly even when someone has been unkind towards us. He taught us that we should not stoop down and return curses or insults but instead show kindness and mercy even if it is not deserved. This hadith teaches us that no matter what people say or do, we should always strive for good character and treat others as we would like them to treat us.
