Honoring Parents After Death

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the ways to honor one's parents after their death, such as offering funeral prayer, praying for forgiveness, fulfilling promises and upholding ties of kinship.

It was narrated that Abu Usaid, Malik bin Rabi'ah, said: "While we were with the Prophet, a man from the Banu Salamah came to him and said: " O messenger of Allah, is there anyway of honoring my parents that I can still do for them after they die?' He said: "Yes offering the funeral prayer for them, praying for forgiveness for them, fulfilling their promises after their death, honoring their friends and upholding the ties of kinship which you would not have were it nor for them'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of honoring one's parents even after their death. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that we can still honor our parents by offering funeral prayer for them, praying for forgiveness on their behalf, fulfilling any promises they made and upholding ties of kinship which were established through them. Offering funeral prayer is a way to show respect and gratitude towards our deceased parents as it is a form of supplication to Allah asking Him to forgive them and grant them mercy. Praying for forgiveness is also an important way to honor our deceased parents as it shows that we are seeking Allah’s mercy on their behalf. Fulfilling any promises made by our deceased parent is another way in which we can show respect towards them even after they have passed away. Lastly, maintaining ties with relatives who were connected through our parent’s relationship with them is another way in which we can continue honoring our parent’s legacy even after they have passed away.
