Sahih al-Bukhari 3406 (Book 60, Hadith 79) #3257
The Best Fruit and Prophets as Shepherds

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was picking fruits from a tree and advised his companions to pick the black fruit as it was the best. He also mentioned that all prophets were shepherds.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: We were with Allah's Messenger picking the fruits of the 'Arak trees, and Allah's Messenger said, "Pick the black fruit, for it is the best". The companions asked, "Were you a shepherd?" He replied, "There was no prophet who was not a shepherd".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take responsibility for your life; Strive for excellence in whatever you do; Pick only high-quality items; Follow advice given by prophets

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of picking the best quality of something, in this case, fruit. It is narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah who was with the Prophet Muhammad at the time when he picked fruits from an Arak tree. The Prophet advised them to pick only black fruits as they were of better quality than other colors. He also mentioned that all prophets before him were shepherds, which implies that even though they had a great responsibility, they still took care of their own needs and did not rely on others for their sustenance. This teaches us to take responsibility for our own lives and strive for excellence in whatever we do.
