Sunan Ibn Majah 3204 (Book 28, Hadith 5) #32558
The Consequences of Keeping Dogs as Pets

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog as a pet will reduce one's good deeds, except if it is used for farming or herding livestock.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat will be deducted from him (good) deeds every day, except a dog for farming or herding livestock".

QUICK LESSONS:
Use animals responsibly and only keep them when necessary

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that keeping a dog as a pet can have negative consequences on one's good deeds. According to the Prophet Muhammad, every day that someone keeps a dog, one qirat will be deducted from their good deeds. A qirat is an amount of reward given by Allah for doing something good and beneficial in this world. However, this does not apply to dogs used for farming or herding livestock; these are exempt from the rule and do not cause any deduction in rewards. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions and how they affect our rewards in the hereafter. We should also remember to use animals responsibly and only keep them when necessary; otherwise we may face consequences from Allah Almighty.
