Sunan Ibn Majah 3205 (Book 28, Hadith 6) #32559
Keeping Dogs and its Effects on Rewards

SUMMARY: Dogs should not be killed, except for those that are all black. People who keep dogs will have their rewards reduced by two Qirat each day.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Messenger of Allah said: "Were it not that dogs form one of the communities (or nations – of creatures), I would have commanded that they be killed. But kill those that are all black. There are no people who keep a dog, except for dogs used for herding livestock, hunting or farming, but two Qirat will be deducted from their reward each day".

QUICK LESSONS:
Do not kill any dog except for those that are all black; Be mindful of your actions and how they can affect your reward from Allah SWT in the hereafter; Show compassion towards animals; Keep dogs only if they are used for herding livestock, hunting or farming purposes .
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is not permissible to kill dogs, except for those that are all black. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us that people who keep dogs, other than those used for herding livestock, hunting or farming, will have their rewards reduced by two Qirat each day. A Qirat is a unit of measurement in the Islamic faith which is equal to one-third of a person's daily reward from Allah SWT. Therefore this hadith encourages us to be mindful of our actions and how they can affect our rewards from Allah SWT in the hereafter.
