Sunan Ibn Majah 2869 (Book 24, Hadith 117) #32223
The Prophet's Compassionate Treatment of Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ accepted a pledge from a slave to emigrate, and when his master came looking for him, the Prophet ﷺ bought him in exchange for two black slaves. After that, he did not accept any pledges until he asked whether the person was a slave or not.

It was narrated that Jabir said: "A slave came and gave his pledge to the Prophet , pledging to emigrate, and the Prophet did not realize that he was a slave. Then his master came looking for him, and the Prophet said: 'Sell him to me,’ and he brought him in exchange for two black slaves. Then after that he did not accept the pledge from anyone until he had asked whether he was a slave".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be compassionate towards those who are less fortunate than you; Strive towards justice & fairness; Respect & value human life regardless of social status or wealth; Accept pledges only after asking whether they are free people or not .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the compassionate treatment of slaves by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is narrated that Jabir said that once a slave came to give his pledge to emigrate and the Prophet ﷺ did not realize that he was a slave. When his master came looking for him, instead of sending him back to his master, the Prophet ﷺ offered to buy him in exchange for two black slaves. After this incident, whenever someone gave their pledge to emigrate, he would ask them if they were slaves or not before accepting their pledge. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to be compassionate towards those who are less fortunate than us and how we should always strive towards justice and fairness even if it means going out of our way like what the Prophet ﷺ did in this situation. It also shows us how much respect and value Islam gives towards human life regardless of social status or wealth as everyone has an equal right under Islamic law.
