Sunan Ibn Majah 2867 (Book 24, Hadith 115) #32221
The Pledge to Worship Allah Alone

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of worshipping Allah alone, establishing the five daily prayers, listening and obeying, and not asking people for anything.

'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja’i said: "We were with the Prophet – seven or eight or nine of us – and he said: 'Will you not give pledge to the Messenger of Allah?’ So we stretched forth our hands and someone said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have already given you our pledge. On what basis shall we give this pledge?’ He said: '(On the basis that) you will worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, you will establish the five daily prayers, you will listen and obey’ – then he spoke some words under his breath – 'and you will not ask the people for anything.’ He said: 'I saw some of that group. If he dropped his whip he would not ask anyone to pick it up for him.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship only Allah ; Establish regular prayer ; Listen & obey ; Avoid unnecessary requests from others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of worshipping Allah alone and not associating anything with Him. It also emphasizes on establishing the five daily prayers, listening and obeying, as well as not asking people for anything. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked a group of his companions to give him a pledge that they would worship Allah alone without associating any partners with Him. He also asked them to establish their five daily prayers regularly, listen and obey him in all matters related to religion, and not ask people for anything even if they drop something like a whip or any other item. This hadith teaches us that we should always put our trust in Allah first before relying on anyone else or asking them for help in any matter. We should also be mindful of our obligations towards Him such as praying regularly and following His commands without hesitation or doubt. Lastly, it reminds us that we should never forget our manners when dealing with others by avoiding unnecessary requests from them even if it’s something small like picking up an item we dropped on the ground.
